Job Title: Energy Alternatives Research Assistant

Hours/Week: 35

Hourly Wage: $16

Time Frame: June 22nd – August 31st, 2020

Background: Wa Ni Ska Tan Alliance of Hydro-Impacted Communities is a research-based alliance that explores both the positive and negative implications of hydropower for nearby environments and Indigenous communities in Manitoba and other affected regions across Canada and beyond. The goal of Wa Ni Ska Tan is to enable healing, as well as meaningful and desirable social and environmental change through community directed projects and research.

Duties: Working alongside graduate students, researchers and staff, the Research Assistant’s primary work will be to develop a feasibility plan of initiating a small-scale, off-grid, solar project in two Northern Manitoba communities, as well as researching other forms of small-scale renewable energies.

  1. Research Alternative Renewable Energies
  • Research different forms of small-scale renewable energies such as solar, geothermal, wind, biomass, etc.
  • Develop cost estimations for implementing various small-scale renewable energy pilot projects
  • Work with community partners to understand and incorporate local knowledge and perspectives around energy use
  1. Feasibility Plan for Solar Pilot Project
  • Research appropriate equipment for climate and communities
  • Develop project budget
  • Create installation plans and plain-language instructions
  • Provide distanced project support for installation

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a post-secondary Engineering program or equivalent
  • Comfort working with environmental sciences and researchers
  • Commitment to and experience with environmental and social justice work
  • Experience working in or with Northern and/or Indigenous communities is an asset
